Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool to help you manage your weight and health, but surgery by itself is not a cure. It must be followed by radical lifestyle changes that include regular daily exercise and a healthy diet according to a few simple rules that we will teach you. Following these rules is essential for long-term success in reaching your goals for weight, health and life.

Our caring, compassionate and expert team will provide coordinated care to help you maximize your health and safety before, during and after your surgery. Our comprehensive program includes ongoing support and medical follow-up to help you maintain good health and a healthy weight and lifestyle for the rest of your life.

What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery treats medically significant obesity. There are several kinds of procedures that vary widely in long-term effectiveness and safety. The most common procedure, gastric bypass Roux-en-Y, has a long history of success and a reputation as the "gold standard." A very small stomach pouch is created, reducing the stomach to greatly restrict the amount of food you can eat. It rearranges where the new stomach pouch connects into the intestines to bypass the majority of the stomach and part of the intestines that absorb the food you eat. Your body will absorb less calories (and nutrients – malabsorbtion) while storing less fat so you can lose weight. Because of malabsorption, it's very important to eat highly nutritious foods and take supplemental vitamins to remain healthy.

Camino Medical Group usually recommends gastric bypass procedures that provide both malabsorption and restriction of food intake such as the Roux-en Y gastric bypass. These procedures produce more weight loss than surgeries such as gastric banding that only restrict the amount of food a person can eat.
